Paul Barese is a consultant, producer/director, video editor, social researcher, and entrepreneur. Working in strategic design he began working with video ethnography and narrative to help clients better understand stakeholder motivations, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors.
Paul launched Quimera.tv in 2003 (www.quimera.tv), a video consulting and production/post-production group. Quimera works with for- and non-profit clients in a variety of industries. Projects range from short- and long-form documentaries to advocacy, marketing, research, and training. Through its network of talent the company helps clients understand how they can use video and then works with them to develop creative strategies and products for learning and change.
Background
Early professional experience includes research and case writing at Harvard Business School (HBS) and INSEAD. Topics ranged from strategic management in developing countries to strategic alliances in the aerospace industry.
While at HBS in 1993 Paul began to focus on HIV/AIDS as a business issue leading him to Botswana. Initially with USAID then as an independent consultant he worked for three years to engage the private sector in the country’s multisectoral response to HIV/AIDS. Projects included the creation of the Botswana Business Coalition on AIDS, a baseline survey for the Botswana Institute for the Development of Policy Analysis, and a case study series for Family Health International/ USAID on the development of HIV/AIDS Programs in the workplace.
Paul’s last position at HBS in 1998 involved him with the Initiative for Social Enterprise and Business Leadership in the Social Sector. The project was Paul’s first opportunity to work on documentary video.
Education
Studies include an MA in International Relations from Boston University, an executive education course in Management of Strategic Partnerships and Alliances at INSEAD, and first-year PhD coursework in organizational-behavior theory and research methods at Boston College.
